Lambkill had spent little time at home, and when he did, he had often gone to sit by their dead baby brother's grave.

Not once--not once--in all the cycles since had Lambkill spoken their mother's name. And Tannin wondered about that. Lambkill had always been strange with women---as though deep down inside him, he harbored a hatred for all females, an aversion born on that day of their little brother's death. Lambkill clearly preferred the company of men. Yet he had married four times.

Tannin swallowed down his dust-dry throat and stretched out on the ground again. He tugged his hides up over his belly. Yes, Lambkill had been married four times ... and he'd beaten each of his wives senseless for not giving him a son.

Tannin ran a hand through his sweat-drenched hair, wondering.

"All right, Man," the Boy said in a shaking voice. "I finally understand that only by keeping Death alive in me will I learn about.

Life---and overcome my cowardice .. .

"So I will be his son. Though I am not."I will sacrifice my ability to be born again and to rest in my mother's arms, so that I can be dead and suffer with this human that I do not even know .. . but it's hard, Man. It's so hard."

Gasps came from the Star People and wavered around him like glowing, gaseous fires. The Boy's chest shook with sobs.

The Man's voice echoed through the starlit womb of night: "I may have been wrong about your arrogance...."
